Promoting cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue
UNESCO's culture programmes focus on building foundations for sustainable development through protection and safeguarding of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, protection of cultural properties and promoting cultural diversity.
Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) undertakes various efforts to enhance activities related to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expressions, World Heritage Convention, and the Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

| Culture and Development Project
|

Through three series of roundtable discussions and a research project, KNCU aims to raise public awareness about the issue of culture and development, which is attracting increased attention from the international society with leading efforts by UNESCO. Culture and Development Roundtable Series is led by a panel of 30 experts representing diverse academic disciplines and different sectors. KNCU hopes to facilitate the public discourse around the important role of culture and cultural diversity in achieving sustainable development, especially with the closure of MDGs in 2015, and suggest new paradigms for global development. more

| UNESCO Creative Cities Network

|
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which was launched by UNESCO in 2004, aims to enhance the creative, social, and economic potential of cities by fostering their creative industries. Structured around the seven themes of literature, cinema, music, design, media arts, gastronomy, and folk art and crafts, the Creative Cities Network encourages cities to utilize their cultural assets in developing specific creative industries.
KNCU will work closely together with three current member cities in Korea, Seoul, Icheon and Jeonju, to encourage their active participation as well as strengthen the Network in Korea. KNCU will also continue providing information and guidance to Korean city governments interested in joining the Network.

| Cultural Heritage Projects

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, KNCU organizes the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Mayors' Forum for World Heritage Cities from 29 to 30 of August in Gyeongju City in Korea. Various kinds of public-private cooperation projects including constructing online database of World Heritage under the partnership with NAVER, the representative portal site of Korea, and public-awareness raising projects under the partnership with Asiana Airlines are being conducted as well.

| International Conference of Experts on the Return of Cultural Property

KNCU will organize the International Conference of Experts on the Return of Cultural Property from 16 to 18 of October in Seoul, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea. the Republic of Korea is a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in case of Illicit Appropriation (ICPRCP).
