The Republic of Korea (Korea) joined UNESCO as the Organization’s 55th Member State, on 14 June 1950. Unfortunately, the Korean War broke out very shortly after but, even in the midst of this terrible war, the Korean government pushed ahead with plans to establish Korea’s National Commission in order to facilitate UNESCO activities in Korea. Thanks to these efforts, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) was officially founded in 1954.
During the process of post-war rehabilitation, UNESCO became a stepping-stone toward the reconstruction and development of Korea by supporting the construction of a printing factory capable of printing thirty million primary school textbooks annually.
Since its establishment, KNCU has worked actively to strengthen cooperative ties between UNESCO, the Korean government, and various UNESCO-related organizations both within and outside of Korea. KNCU is also committed to pursuing and publicizing the goals of UNESCO in Korea and to fostering participation by the Korean public in UNESCO activities.
