Peace in the minds of youth: Beyond war to sustainable peace

 

 

Forum outline

Host: Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea

Organizer: Korean National Commission for UNESCO

​Date: (forum) July 26th – 28th / (pre-forum sessions) May-July

Venue: (forum) Hotel President, Seoul / (pre-forum sessions) online

​Aim: Build a global network for youth from the Republic of Korea (ROK) and countries that supported ROK in the Korean War, create a platform for interaction to spread peace

Timeline

► May~July: Pre-forum sessions, site visit (Busan)

► July 26th:Site visit(Seoul, Gyeonggi Province) *, welcome dinner

► July 27thOpening ceremony, Intro Talk, presentation of group works

► July 28thUNESCO Talk**, forum evaluation, presentation of ‘Call for Action’

* Site visits will be accompanied by experts

** UNESCO Talk will invite experts discuss social issues relevant to the forum 

 

 

Pre-session forum

Period: May~July

Format: online, site visit (1 time)

Group composition: 8 groups with each 7~10 participants, 1 expert, 1 facilitator 

► ROK residents: Offline

- Site visit to Korean War heritage (Busan)

► ROK residents & overseas participants: Online

- ​Orientation

- ​2 video lectures

- ​Group meetings and activities

- ​Mid-term presentation of group works (feedback from experts)

Areas of interest: “War, peace, and...”

Education / Culture / Media & Information Literacy (MIL) 

Environment & Climate Change / Science & Technology

International Organizations / People / Militarism 

 

 

Application  

Total of 70 people will be selected to participate in the forum. This will include 35 South Korean nationals and 35 people from the 22 countries that supported ROK during the Korean War

​ Military support: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, New Zealand, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Türkiye, United Kingdom, United States

​ Medical support: Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, Norway, Sweden

• Announcement of accepted participants: by April 14th, 2023 
Qualifications: 

​- Age 19-34 (on July 27th, 2023) 

- Ability to communicate in English
- (desirable) Descendants of Korean War veterans 
- (desirable) Those who reside or have resided in the Republic of Korea and/or have studied/are studying a topic related to the forum. (e.g. Korean Studies, International Relations)
* In the case of insufficient suitable applications from youth overseas, additional international students residing in South Korea will be selected. 

Assistance & benefits

- A certificate of completion will be issued to all participants.
- Meals, and transportation during the official forum schedule will be provided for all participants.
- Accommodation during the official forum schedule and round-trip transportation fee will be provided for participants from overseas and residents outside Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.
