The
2019 East and Southeast Asia Meeting of National Commissions for UNESCO,
co-organized by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) and the City
of Jeonju, with the support of the Ministry of Education, took place from 28 to
30 August in Jeonju, Republic of Korea. More
than 70 delegates attended the meeting, from 12 National Commissions, the UNESCO
Secretariat, and various UNESCO Offices and Category 2 Centers in the region. The
aims of the meeting were to discuss the role of UNESCO in the implementation of
the Sustainable Development Goals, and to strengthen the cooperation among
National Commissions in the region. Several joint projects were proposed at the
meeting, by the Korean and Vietnamese National Commissions, the UNESCO
Secretariat and the UNESCO Bangkok Office. The meeting was organized as a follow-up to the 2018 Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting of National Commissions for UNESCO, co-hosted in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, in September 2018 by the KNCU and the UNESCO Bangkok Office. A further meeting of East and Southeast Asian National Commissions will be organized by the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO in 2020.
